Hackers attack large Brazilian bank

(AP) ? A group of Internet hackers said Tuesday it took down the website of Brazil's second largest private sector bank, one day after it did the same with the country's largest private bank.

The group that calls itself "Anonymous Brasil" said on Twitter: "Attention sailors: Target hit! The http://bradesco.com.br is sinking. TANGO DOWN."

Banco Bradesco SA said in a statement that its site suffered "momentary interruptions," due to high traffic, but that it was never forced offline. However, The Associated Press was unable to access the site in repeated attempts Tuesday.

The group said on Twitter that its attacks were a protest against corruption and would continue for at least a week.

On Monday, the group attacked the website of Itau Unibanco Banco Multiplo SA, Brazil's largest private sector bank, saying it was the first of several such attacks.

That bank said in a statement that its site was offline for part of the day, but that it was re-established after the problem was detected.

The Brazilian Federation of Banks said in a statement posted on its website that it has been calling for approval of a law that criminalizes electronic attacks and fraud.

One week ago, the websites of the Sao Paulo state government and state court were taken down for a few hours by the same group of hackers.

Anonymous Brasil said the attacks were to protest the evictions of some 5,000 people from a sprawling slum.

In June of last year, hackers struck the website of Brazil's statistics agency and temporarily blocked traffic to the websites of the Brazilian presidency, the nation's internal revenue service, oil company Petrobras, the Senate and the Sports Ministry

China leader stresses communist control over army (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese President Hu Jintao is stressing the ruling Communist Party's ultimate control over China's rapidly modernizing military.

Hu's assertion came Sunday in a statement in the military's Liberation Army Daily newspaper calling on the 2.3 million-member force to develop advanced military culture. That is communist shorthand for retaining a leading role for socialist ideology.

Such calls seek to counter any movement toward nationalizing the force by making it ultimately responsible to the government rather than the party.

The People's Liberation Army has in recent years acquired latest-generation jet fighters and other advanced equipment. Last year it began sea trials for its first aircraft carrier.

Newt Gingrich Defends Space Plans, Says He Will 'Change Washington Decisively'

Newt Gingrich on Sunday morning defended his much-ridiculed pitch for a space colony on the moon by drawing a distinction between himself and what he described as Mitt Romney's technocratic timidity.

During Thursday night's GOP debate in Florida, the former Massachusetts governor reacted to Gingrich's space colony plans with derision. Noting his 25 years in business, Romney said, "If I had a business executive come to me and say they wanted to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I'd say, 'You're fired.'"

The former House speaker responded Sunday on "This Week," saying, "You know, Romney's run for six years, and his message on the space coast this week was he would assemble a group of experts to think about what he might do as president, some day, possibly."

"I'm very different. I think that we can, in fact, fix Social Security with a bold new plan," he added. "I think that we can, in fact, re-launch the country with an American energy plan that lowers the price of gasoline and generates huge amounts of revenue for the federal government, creates millions of American jobs. I think we can, in fact, use the private sector and modern science to have a bold program in space."

Gingrich continued:

I never said it would be a government program, but I do believe a president who's visionary, a president who believes in America's greatness, a president who's willing to do...launch big projects and rally the American people to big ideas...you know, Eisenhower launched the interstate highway system. We all drive on it now. I suspect if I had proposed that, Mitt Romney would have said, "Oh, that's way too expensive. Let me study carefully two-lane highways."

This is a perfect example of the difference in the two candidacies. He is a manager who will manage the decay. I am a leader who has a vision of a bold, exciting American future where we change Washington decisively. And there's a good reason the Washington establishment is afraid of me. I will, in fact, lead the American people to change Washington. Romney will, in fact, hang out with his establishment friends, managing the decay, and explaining to the rest of us why that's the best hope we have.

Japan prices fall, mild deflation to persist (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan's core consumer prices fell for the third consecutive month in the year to December, and mild deflation is expected to persist this year as energy prices stabilize and worries about Europe's debt crisis suppress wage growth and economic activity.

Core consumer prices declined an annual 0.1 percent, matching the median estimate, and a narrower measure that excludes both food and energy also fell in a sign that Japan continues to grapple with a strong yen, which pushes down import prices and makes exporters reluctant to raise salaries.

Retail sales fell 1.2 pct in 2011, the first fall in two years, and auto and machinery equipment sales posted record falls in the series, which dates back to 1980. But sales rose an annual 2.5 percent in December, the biggest increase in 16 months.

The Bank of Japan and the government concede that the economy is in a lull, and they could come under increasing pressure to support it with currency intervention and monetary policy easing as Europe's debt crisis weighs on external demand.

Europe's downturn could offset the economic benefits of rebuilding the country's earthquake-damaged northeast coast.

"The stagnation of other developed countries is likely to push back the timing of Japan beating deflation from the mid-2010s as originally thought to the late 2010s," said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute.

"The BOJ will need to keep its ultra-easy stance in the meantime. If risks from the euro-zone debt crisis heighten, it could move for an additional easing in the near term."

Japan's core consumer price index (CPI) includes oil products but excludes volatile prices of fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood.

The so-called core-core inflation index, which excludes food and energy prices and is similar to the core index used in the United States, fell 1.1 percent in the year to December.

Core consumer prices in Tokyo, available a month before the nationwide data, fell 0.4 percent in the year to January. That compares with the median estimate for a 0.3 percent annual decline.

HARD TO EXPECT SELF-SUSTAINED RECOVERY SOON

Annual data showed the core CPI slipped 0.3 percent in 2011, the third straight yearly fall. Japan's consumer inflation has been around zero or minus for over a decade, except a 1.5 percent rise in 2008 on the back of an increase in energy prices.

"Overall consumption is relatively firm partly supported by reconstruction demand. But it is hard to expect to see a self-sustainable recovery in private spending," said Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JPMorgan Securities Japan.

"With uncertainty about the economic outlook and lackluster wage growth, consumers are unlikely to boost spending."

Nippon Keidanren, the country's largest business lobby, cited this week uncertainty about energy, the strong yen and a manufacturing shift overseas as reasons why pay raises are out of the question in annual labor union negotiations in the spring.

Japan's economy will likely show a mild contraction in the fiscal year ending in March but is expected to rebound next fiscal year, supported by reconstruction demand after the March 2011 earthquake.

Reconstruction could help narrow the gap between supply and demand but won't be enough to inflate demand in excess of supply and bring about an end to deflation, economists say.

Some Bank of Japan board members see a slight delay in post-quake reconstruction demand, and the global slowdown is somewhat more acute than previously thought, minutes of the central bank's December 20-21 meeting showed on Friday.

Less Salt, More Veggies in School Lunches: USDA (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled on Wednesday new standards for school meals -- the first revisions in more than 15 years. The goal: To provide healthier meals and better nutrition for the nearly 32 million children who take part in school meal programs.

The new standards include offering fruits and vegetables every day, increasing whole grain-rich foods, serving only fat-free or low-fat milk, limiting calories based on children's ages, and reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Mrs. Obama and Vilsack, who were joined by celebrity chef Rachael Ray, made the announcement at an elementary school in Alexandria, Va.

"As parents, we try to prepare decent meals, limit how much junk food our kids eat, and ensure they have a reasonably balanced diet," Mrs. Obama said in a news release. "And when we're putting in all that effort, the last thing we want is for our hard work to be undone each day in the school cafeteria. When we send our kids to school, we expect that they won't be eating the kind of fatty, salty, sugary foods that we try to keep them from eating at home."

In the same statement, Vilsack said, "Improving the quality of the school meals is a critical step in building a healthy future for our kids."

Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said that "these changes to school food standards are welcome, commendable and unquestionably helpful in efforts to combat childhood obesity and all of the metabolic mayhem that follows in its wake."

Still, Katz doesn't think the changes go far enough.

And they aren't as complete as the Obama administration had wanted, according to the Associated Press.

Last year, Congress blocked some of the agriculture department's planned revisions, including cutting down how often french fries and pizza could be served, the news agency said.

In November, Congress passed a bill requiring the agriculture department to continue to count tomato paste on pizzas as a vegetable, the AP reported.

"Making healthier pizza is a great idea. However, it is unfortunate and rather ridiculous that Congress still thinks tomato paste is a vegetable," said dietitian Samantha Heller, clinical nutrition coordinator at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn.

Congress also refused to allow the USDA to limit servings of potatoes. Those congressional directions must be incorporated into the final rule, the AP reported.

The news service said that potato growers, companies that make frozen pizzas for schools and others in the food industry lobbied for the changes made by Congress, and that conservatives said the government shouldn't be telling children what to eat.

Some school districts objected to some of the requirements, saying they went too far and would cost too much, the AP said.

Katz said, "It is unacceptable that food industry elements lobbied Congress successfully for changes in nutrition standards that placed profits ahead of children's health.

"The argument that we cannot afford to do even better is spurious, because it leaves us needing to afford the treatment of type 2 diabetes in children. It leaves us needing to pay for bariatric surgery in adolescents," he added.

Still, the changes signal some progress, Katz said. "We should not expect it to change childhood obesity rates. School lunch was never the cause of epidemic obesity, and improving it will not be the cure. But school lunch has long been part of the problem and these improved standards will help make it one part of a comprehensive solution, now long overdue," he said.

Heller rejected the argument that children will not eat healthier foods.

"When given the time, exposure and encouragement as well as altering environmental influences, kids will eat healthy foods when available," she said. "Just putting fresh fruit by the cafeteria check-out in schools increases consumption by schoolchildren considerably. Making fresh, healthy foods delicious and explaining to kids how and why good nutrition is critical for them to do well in their favorite activities such as sports, art or science, will also boost consumption," Heller said.

"Food companies, lobbyists, and members of Congress would do well to step up to the plate and start setting good examples of healthy eating and lifestyles," Heller added.

The new rule is based on recommendations from a panel of experts from the Institute of Medicine and also updated changes from the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Florida Primary Election Facts and Figures (ContributorNetwork)

Newsmax refers to the Jan. 31 Florida primary as "Armageddon." Whereas Republican candidates Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have plenty of Super PAC money to get out their messages, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul lack matching funds. What does the Florida election landscape look like? How the Sunshine State vote in the 2008 primaries?

Who is on the ballot?

The Florida Division of Elections reports that the Republican candidates listed on the Presidential Preference Primary ballot for Jan. 31 are Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum. Since President Barack Obama is the only Democratic candidate listed, there will be no Democratic Party Presidential Preference Primary in 2012.

What is the electorate's makeup in the Sunshine State?

Election officials highlight that -- as of Jan. 23 -- there are 4,071,185 registered Republican voters. Additionally, there are 4,559,918 registered Democrats and 2,633,521 voters without party affiliation. To vote in the Republican primary, a voter must be a registered Republican. Registered Democrats or unaffiliated voters may not vote for a Republican candidate vying for the party nomination in this primary election.

When does voting start?

The 2012 Elections Calendar details that early voting already started on Jan. 21. It will continue until Jan. 28. The deadline to register for voting in the presidential primary was Jan. 3. Election Day is Jan. 31. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Is early voting popular in Florida?

MSNBC notes that already in excess of 143,000 registered voters have cast their ballots for the Florida primary. This figure is the sum total of absentee ballots received as well as early voter turnout. Palm Beach County's Supervisor of Elections has released an unofficial tally of local early voters. It shows that as of Jan 23, in this vicinity already 3,659 individuals have cast their ballots at various libraries and city halls.

How did Florida vote in the 2008 primaries?

The CNN Election Center highlights that in 2008, 36 percent of voters voted cast their ballots for John McCain. Romney was a close second with 31 percent. Paul came in with 3 percent. Of Democratic primary voters, 50 percent chose Hillary Clinton. Only 33 percent of voters picked then-candidate Obama. On both sides of the aisle, the majority of voters were 60 years of age or older. The next biggest demographic was comprised of the

AP Exclusive: US talks to Afghan insurgent group (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Anxious to accelerate peace moves, top-level U.S. officials have held talks with a representative of an insurgent movement led by a former Afghan prime minister who has been branded a terrorist by Washington, a relative of the rebel leader says.

Dr. Ghairat Baheer, a representative and son-in-law of longtime Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar (Gul-bu-DEEN HEK-mah-tyar), told The Associated Press this week that he had met separately with David Petraeus, former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan who is now CIA director, and had face-to-face discussions earlier this month with U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker and U.S. Marine Gen. John Allen, currently the top commander in the country.

Baheer, who was released in 2008 after six years in U.S. detention at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, described his talks with U.S. officials as nascent and exploratory. Yet, Baheer says the discussions show that the U.S. knows that in addition to getting the blessing of Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar ? a bitter rival of Hekmatyar even though both are fighting international troops ? any peace deal would have to be supported by Hekmatyar, who has thousands of fighters and followers primarily in the north and east.

Hizb-i-Islami, which means Islamic party, has had ties to al-Qaida but in 2010 floated a 15-point peace plan during informal meetings with the Afghan government in Kabul. At the time, however, U.S. officials refused to see the party's delegation.

"Hizb-i-Islami is a reality that no one can ignore," Baheer said during an interview last week at his spacious home in a posh suburb of Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. "For a while, the United States and the Kabul government tried not to give so much importance to Hizb-i-Islami, but now they have come to the conclusion that they cannot make it without Hizb-i-Islami."

In Washington, National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden would not confirm that such meetings took place but said the U.S. was maintaining "a range of contacts in support of an Afghan-led reconciliation process."

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the high-level meetings, said Petraeus last met with Baheer in July 2011 when he was still commanding NATO forces in Afghanistan. Petraeus took over as CIA director in September.

On Saturday, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said he also had met recently with Hizb-i-Islami representatives. Baheer said he attended those meetings but added that the party considers the Afghan government corrupt and lacking legitimacy.

Karzai's announcement appeared intended to bolster his position as the key player in the search for peace. The U.S. repeatedly has said that formal negotiations must be Afghan-led, but Karzai has complained that his government has not been directly involved in recent preliminary talks with Taliban representatives and plans for setting up a Taliban political office in the Gulf state of Qatar.

Baheer said his meeting with Petraeus, whom he described as a "very humble, polite person," was marked by a few rounds of verbal sparring with each boasting a battlefield strength that the other dismissed as exaggerated.

"There was a psychological war in these first meetings," he said.

Baheer said Crocker and Allen tried to persuade Hizb-i-Islami to become part of Afghanistan's political network, accept the Afghan security forces and embrace the nation's current constitution. He said Hizb-i-Islami was ready to accept the security forces and the constitution, but wants a multiparty commission established to review and revise the charter.

"We are willing to make compromises," said Baheer. "We already have said we will accept the Afghan army and the police."

He said Hizb-i-Islami envisioned a multiparty government in postwar Afghanistan. At the same time, the group wants all U.S. and NATO forces, including military trainers, to leave Afghanistan, he said.

"The presence of any foreign forces will be not acceptable to us under any cover," he said. "Daily, there is another American killing of civilians. The longer they stay, the more they are hated by the Afghan people."

Overtures to Hekmatyar's group show not only the degree of U.S. interest in pursuing a settlement but also the complexity of putting together an agreement acceptable to all sides in factious Afghanistan. The U.S. formally declared Hekmatyar a "global terrorist" in 2003 because of alleged links to al-Qaida and froze all assets which he may have in the United States.

Hekmatyar, who is in his mid-60s, was among the major recipients of U.S. aid during the Afghan war against the Soviets in the 1980s. He and other anti-Soviet commanders swept into Kabul in 1992 and ousted the pro-Soviet government, only to turn against one another in a bitter and bloody power struggle that destroyed vast sections of the Afghan capital and killed an estimated 50,000 civilians before the Taliban seized the city.

A bitter rival of Mullah Omar, Hekmatyar fled to Iran and remained there until the Taliban were ousted in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. He declared war on foreign troops in his country and rebuilt his military forces, which by 2008 had become a major threat to the U.S.-led coalition.

Contacts with Hekmatyar's group as well as parallel efforts to negotiate with the Taliban have taken on new urgency following the NATO decision to withdraw foreign combat forces, transfer security responsibility to the Afghans by the end of 2014 and bring an end to the unpopular war, which is increasingly seen as a drain on the financially strapped Western countries that provide most of the troops.

On Sunday, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman, completed two days of meetings about the peace process with Karzai and other Afghan officials. Grossman, who was to travel to Qatar on Monday, urged the Taliban to issue a "clear statement" against international terrorism and affirm their commitment to the peace process "to end the armed conflict in Afghanistan."

U.S. officials also have reached out to the Pakistan-based Haqqani militant network to test its interest in peace talks. Haqqani fighters, the second largest insurgent group after the Taliban, have been blamed for most of the high-profile attacks in the heart of the Afghan capital.

Pakistan rejects U.S. report on NATO attack (Reuters)

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) ? Pakistan's military Monday rejected U.S. findings on a November 26 NATO cross-border air attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, reducing the chances of a resolution of the dispute and an improvement in ties which are at their lowest in years.

"Pakistan does not agree with several portions and findings of the investigation report, as these are factually not correct," the military said in a statement after a detailed review of the U.S. investigation.

The U.S. report released on December 22 found both American and Pakistani forces were to blame for the incident near the Afghan border, inflaming already strained ties.

"Affixing partial responsibility of the incident on Pakistan is therefore unjustified and unacceptable," said the Pakistani military.

Pakistan responded to the attack by shutting down ground routes to supply U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan and forced the United States to vacate an air base used to launch drone flights.

"This is going to affect the relationship. The relationship was already in the doldrums, it was in bad shape. I don't know if it has the capacity to get any worse," said Mahmud Durrani, a retired Pakistan army major general.

"It's very unusual because normally allies fight side by side."

Last week, a senior Pakistani security official told Reuters the routes would be reopened, but heavy tariffs would be imposed.

"The fundamental cause of the incident of 26th November, 2011, was the failure of U.S./ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) to share its near-border operation with Pakistan at any level," said the military.

The death of the Pakistani soldiers dug in along the mountainous, isolated border area, along with the initial NATO response, has incensed Pakistanis and marked yet another setback in the Obama administration's efforts to improve chronically troubled ties with an uneasy ally.

The U.S. military blamed Pakistani soldiers for firing at NATO forces as they prepared for a mission in the remote corner of eastern Afghanistan.

The U.S. investigation also conceded a critical error by U.S. troops, who told Pakistan the cross-border shooting was taking place about 9 miles away due to mapping error. Pakistan responded by saying it had no troops there.

Pakistan admitted that its posts engaged in "speculative "fire," including the use of mortar bombs, which the U.S. interpreted as hostile fire.

But it denies that it fired in the direction of the Afghan and NATO forces and was instead firing at "suspected militant movement."

Why Sony's 'PlayStation Phones' Failed to Make a Splash (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The tech world was abuzz when the original Sony-Ericcson Xperia Play was released last year, on Verizon and later on AT&T. People called it "the PlayStation Phone," before and after its release, because it was "PlayStation Certified" ... whatever that meant. Apparently, a slide-out game controller and a handful of PlayStation games, sold through apps called the PlayStation Suite.

Since then, a handful of other devices (like the Sony Tablet S) have been updated to receive the PlayStation Suite, and a couple of new PlayStation Certified devices were unveiled at this year's CES. Somehow, though, none of them have quite had the impact that one would expect of a "real" PlayStation device ... like the PlayStation 2, which caused people to line up outside Wal-Marts back around the turn of the century.

Why is that?

Lackluster hardware

First off, there is no one PlayStation Phone. There are a bunch of different devices now, with different looks and specs. Few of them bear all that much resemblance to an actual PlayStation, either, whether in looks or in quality. Just look at Engadget's review of the Xperia Play; the shoulder buttons on the game controller were "too sensitive," and the screen is "one of the worst screens we've seen" on any hardware they've reviewed.

The new Xperia handsets just announced by Sony, like the Xperia Ion, look a little bit more well-designed. But none of them have slider game controllers, which suggests that was only a passing fancy ... and will make it a bit harder to play certain PlayStation games on them.

Dearth of games

Which certain PlayStation games, you ask? Not too many, unfortunately. When the Xperia Play first came out, there were only a handful. As of last October, there were still just 10, according to the PlayStation blog. And these are PlayStation games in the sense that they were made for the original PlayStation ... you know, the PSOne. The one that was made more than 15 years ago.

A handful of other games were given support for the Xperia Play's slider gamepad. The trouble is, no other phones even have that, and it's not looking good that more will. And Android itself doesn't have many games to begin with, at least not great games. At least not compared to the iPad, or even the PlayStation Portable.

Misleading branding

David Hinkle of Joystiq says being PlayStation-Certified means a device can use "entertainment services from Sony Entertainment Network", and the Sony press release he quotes says that it guarantees " a high quality smartphone gaming experience.****" Yes, with four asterisks.

What does that even mean? Can a "PlayStation Certified" phone buy games from the PlayStation Network? No. Can it do PSN multiplayer? No. Will the games you buy on it be playable on your PSP or PS3 consoles? No, and no. So how is it anything but diluting the PlayStation brand, to sell a line of me-too Android smartphones and tablets that are only tangentially connected with it?

The new Xperia phones might do well on the market, but it's not because PlayStation gamers will buy them. And judging from Sony-Ericcson's recent performance, there's a ways it has to go before it's dug itself out of its hole.

(AP) ? New Zealand police raided several homes and businesses linked to the founder of Megaupload.com, a giant Internet file-sharing site shut down by U.S. authorities, on Friday and seized guns, millions of dollars, and nearly $5 million in luxury cars, officials said.

Police arrested founder Kim Dotcom and three Megaupload employees on U.S. accusations that they facilitated millions of illegal downloads of films, music and other content costing copyright holders at least $500 million in lost revenue. Extradition proceedings against them could last a year or more.

With 150 million registered users, about 50 million hits daily and endorsements from music superstars, Megaupload.com was among the world's biggest file-sharing sites. According to a U.S. indictment, the site, which was shut down Thursday, earned Dotcom $42 million in 2010 alone.

Although the company is based in Hong Kong and Dotcom lives in New Zealand, some of the alleged pirated content was hosted on leased servers in Virginia, and that was enough for U.S. prosecutors to act.

New Zealand police served 10 search warrants at several businesses and homes around the city of Auckland.

Police spokesman Grant Ogilvie said the seized cars include a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe worth more than $400,000 as well as several Mercedes. Two short-barreled shotguns and a number of valuable artworks were also confiscated, he added.

He said police seized more than $8 million, money that was invested in various New Zealand financial institutions and which has now been placed in a trust pending the outcome of the cases.

New Zealand's Fairfax Media reported that the four defendants stood together in an Auckland courtroom in the first step of the extradition proceedings.

Dotcom's lawyer raised objections to a media request to take photographs and video, but then Dotcom spoke out from the dock, saying he didn't mind photos or video "because we have nothing to hide." The judge granted the media access, and ruled that the four would remain in custody until a second hearing Monday.

Dotcom, Megaupload's former CEO and current chief innovation officer, is a resident of Hong Kong and New Zealand and a dual citizen of Finland and Germany who had his name legally changed. The 37-year-old was previously known as Kim Schmitz and Kim Tim Jim Vestor.

Two other German citizens and one Dutch citizen also were arrested and three other defendants ? another German, a Slovakian and an Estonian ? remain at large.

Megaupload has retained Washington power attorney Bob Bennett to defend it, according to a person inside the company. Bennett is best known for representing former President Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The person within Megaupload spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the company's plans.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which defends free speech and digital rights online, said in a statement that the arrests set "a terrifying precedent. If the United States can seize a Dutch citizen in New Zealand over a copyright claim, what is next?"

The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to make it easier for authorities to go after sites with pirated material, especially those with overseas headquarters and servers.

Before Megaupload was taken down, the company posted a statement saying allegations that it facilitated massive breaches of copyright laws were "grotesquely overblown."

"The fact is that the vast majority of Mega's Internet traffic is legitimate, and we are here to stay. If the content industry would like to take advantage of our popularity, we are happy to enter into a dialogue. We have some good ideas. Please get in touch," the statement said.

Several sister sites were also shut down, including one dedicated to sharing pornography files.

News of the shutdown seemed to bring retaliation from hackers who claimed credit for attacking the Justice Department's website. Federal officials confirmed it was down for hours Thursday evening and that the disruption was being "treated as a malicious act."

A loose affiliation of hackers known as "Anonymous" claimed credit for the attack. Also hacked was the site for the Motion Picture Association of America, which has campaigned for a crackdown on piracy.

According to the indictment, Megaupload was estimated at one point to be the 13th most frequently visited website on the Internet. Current estimates by companies that monitor Web traffic place it in the top 100.

Megaupload is considered a "cyberlocker," in which users can upload and transfer files that are too large to send by email. Such sites can have perfectly legitimate uses. But the Motion Picture Association of America estimated that the vast majority of content being shared on Megaupload was in violation of copyright laws.

The website allowed users to download some content for free, but made money by charging subscriptions to people who wanted access to faster download speeds or extra content. The website also sold advertising.

Megaupload was unique not only because of its massive size and the volume of downloaded content, but also because it had high-profile support from celebrities, musicians and other content producers who are most often the victims of copyright infringement and piracy. Before the website was taken down, it contained endorsements from Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys and Kanye West, among others.

The company listed Swizz Beatz, a musician who married Keys in 2010, as its CEO. He was not named in the indictment and declined to comment through a representative.

The five-count indictment, which alleges copyright infringement as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering and racketeering, described a site designed specifically to reward users who uploaded pirated content for sharing, and turned a blind eye to requests from copyright holders to remove copyright-protected files.

For instance, users received cash bonuses if they uploaded content popular enough to generate massive numbers of downloads, according to the indictment. Such content was almost always copyright protected, the indictment said.

The Justice Department said it was illegal for anyone to download pirated content, but their investigation focused on the leaders of the company, not end users who may have downloaded a few movies for personal viewing.

A lawyer who represented the company in a lawsuit last year declined to comment Thursday. Efforts to reach an attorney representing Dotcom were unsuccessful.

Although Megaupload is based in Hong Kong, the size of its operation in the southern Chinese city was unclear. The administrative contact listed in its domain registration, Bonnie Lam, did not respond immediately for a request for comment sent to a fax number and email address listed.

The indictment was returned in the Eastern District of Virginia, which claimed jurisdiction in part because some of the alleged pirated materials were hosted on leased servers in Ashburn, Virginia. Prosecutors there have pursued multiple piracy investigations.

The Justice Department also was investigating the "significant increase in activity" that disrupted its website. It said in a statement that it was working to "investigate the origins of this activity, which is being treated as a malicious act until we can fully identify the root cause."

The site appeared to be working again late Thursday. A spokesman for the Motion Picture Association of America said in an emailed statement that the group's site also had been hacked, but it too appeared to be working later in the evening.

"The motion picture and television industry has always been a strong supporter of free speech," the spokesman said. "We strongly condemn any attempts to silence any groups or individuals."

AOC e1649Fwu

With the AOC e1649Fwu ($139 list) you're no longer limited to just a laptop screen while traveling. This 15.6-inch portable monitor lets you extend your current laptop display for use with large spreadsheets, or you can use it for presentations or in a dual monitor setup to display different applications on each screen. Its swiveling support arm lets you use it in portrait or landscape mode, and it has an auto-pivot feature that automatically changes the screen orientation when you rotate the panel. It's a bit bulkier than the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 ($199.99 list, 4 stars) however, and its glossy coating and cabinet showcase every fingerprint smudge.

Design and Setup
At 2.3 pounds the featherweight e1649Fwu weighs exactly the same as Lenovo's 14-inch LT1421 even though it offers a bigger screen size. However, at 1.4 inches it's almost twice as thick as the LT1421 (0.37- 0.85-inches) and its curved cabinet design is not as sleek looking as the LT1421's ThinkVision design. The cabinet is 9.2-inches high and 14.6-inches wide, and has a glossy piano black finish, which looks nice when it's clean but can quickly become a smudgy mess after handling it for a while.

The 15.6-inch TN+ panel is framed by thin 0.50-inch bezels on the sides and slightly wider 0.75-inch bezels on the top and bottom. The bottom bezel sports a silver AOC logo. Like the rest of the cabinet, the bezels and screen coating are glossy and prone to smudging. And while the shiny screen helps give colors some pop, it can be very reflective under certain lighting conditions. Around back is a support arm that folds into the cabinet when not being used. The arm is mounted on a swivel mechanism that allows you to prop up the monitor horizontally on your desktop for use in landscape mode or position it vertically to view it in portrait mode. The monitor automatically changes screen orientation according to how the monitor is positioned, so you don't have to do it manually in the graphics control panel.

As with the Lenovo LT1421, the e1649Fwu only has a single mini-USB port on the back and lacks function buttons, a power switch, and picture controls. But the LT1421 has a brightness control, while the e1649Fwu does not. The e1649Fwu doesn't require a power cord as it pulls power from the USB port. It comes with a CD containing DisplayLink drivers and a Y-shaped USB cable with two connectors on the PC end (some PCs may not provide enough power through a single USB port, in which case the second connector must be used).

Installation is easy enough: Simply load the included DisplayLink software then plug the small end of the USB cable into the monitor's mini-USB port and one of the two regular sized USB connectors in your PC. A DisplayLink icon will appear in your system tray; right click it to choose how you want the e1649Fwu to behave. You can have it mirror your laptop's screen, use it as an extended desktop, or set it as your main monitor. There's an option to optimize it for video, but that doesn't do much to improve the choppy video that comes as a result of transferring a video signal via a USB 2.0 port. In addition to the software CD and USB cable the e1649Fwu comes with a three year warranty covering parts, labor, and backlighting.

Performance
Despite its mirror-like characteristics the e1649Fwu's glossy screen delivers nice, bright colors and natural looking skin tones. It had no trouble displaying even the smallest text from the DisplayMate Scaled Fonts test, and there was no trace of tinting anywhere in the grayscale. However, it struggled to reproduce the darkest and lightest shades of gray from the 64-Step Grayscale test. In other words, it performs like a typical laptop screen.

Viewing angle performance was also typical of a laptop screen; there was some color shifting from the far side angles and significant darkening from the top and bottom angles. The top and bottom angle performance can be problematic when you use the monitor in portrait mode as it will now have very narrow side angle viewing issues.

The AOC e1649Fwu is a neat little 15.6-inch monitor that lets you bring a dual-display setup on the road. Its auto-rotate feature makes it easy to switch from landscape to portrait mode without having to use your graphics control panel, and it displays vivid colors and crisp text. Grayscale and viewing angle performance could be better however, and you'll have to keep a polishing cloth handy to wipe away fingerprints. If you prefer a thinner, sleeker model with a non-reflective screen, the Lenovo LT1421 is a better choice.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the AOC e1649Fwu with several other monitors side by side.

Ricki Lake: The Business of Being Born

I produced the 2008 documentary The Business of Being Born to educate women about their choices in childbirth, and raise questions about maternity care in the U.S. So many aspects of our system did not make sense to me and did not seem to function in the best interest of mothers and babies. It was shocking to me that 40 other countries ranked ahead of the U.S. in terms of newborn death risk and that our maternal mortality rates were on the rise. Both my children's births were such empowering, transformative experiences for me that I became passionate about making sure other new parents had the same opportunities. I felt most pregnant women were overly subjected to the "what-could-go-wrong" stories and the fear-based information.

The Business of Being Born, (a.k.a. BOBB) became an underground hit, a film that film critic Owen Gleiberman recently dubbed "... the rare documentary that is actually changing lives. It deserves to be called revolutionary." My director, Abby Epstein, and I receive hundreds of emails from parents who credit the film for setting them on the path to a positive birth experience or saving them from a potentially damaging one. Last November, Abby and I released our follow-up series, More Business of Being Born (a.k.a. More-BOBB.) Our new set of four films delves deeper into all things birth and features well-known faces including Cindy Crawford, Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bundchen, Melissa Joan Hart, Christy Turlington Burns and Laila Ali speaking openly about their diverse birth experiences.

WATCH:

Abby and I created More-BOBB to answer essential questions about labor and childbirth, covering topics that are not typically discussed in detail at a routine obstetric appointment. We just started hosting community screenings around the country and I am reminded once again about why this arena is my passion. Women desperately need this information as there seems to be a huge lack of resources and access to birth options. One appreciative mommy blogger wrote: "I really can't express how comprehensive and valuable these DVDs are. Save your Thursday nights and just watch these instead of going to pre-natal class..."

One of our films is titled "The VBAC Dilemma." What's a VBAC you might ask? It stands for "vaginal birth after cesarean." The VBAC rate has dropped from 28 percent in the 1990's to 9 percent today. You also might ask why most people still believe the old adage "once a cesarean, always a cesarean" and are not even aware that a VBAC can actually be a safer option in some cases than a repeat c-section. And you might be surprised to learn that a mother in Los Angeles is able to have a VBAC but a mother who lives 60 miles away in Ventura would be forced to have a repeat cesarean simply because the hospital's insurance policy wont cover it. Access to VBACs is becoming more crucial now that one in three American women give birth by cesarean. By denying mothers access to VBACs, more women are having multiple cesareans which become riskier with each surgery.

For me, this is not about promoting natural birth or claiming one model of care is superior to another. This is about doing the best for mothers and babies. The bottom line is that mothers who receive attentive prenatal care and have a safe, positive birth experience are in a better position to create a healthy attachment to their infants, have more success breastfeeding and enter the experience of motherhood feeling empowered. And, that concept -- the respect for birth as the sacred beginning of motherhood -- is what has become sorely lost in our mainstream medical system.

Globally, in 2009, an estimated 3.3 million babies died during their first four weeks of life. Researchers have estimated that these deaths could be reduced by two-thirds with measures like providing antibiotics and implementing resuscitation techniques. I ask you to join me in fighting for the right of all mothers to have access to safe birth options. How and where you decide to bring your child into this world is a choice that belongs to you. Like the life-changing empowerment I experienced during the births of my children, my work on behalf of global motherhood has revolutionized my purpose in the world.

Amy Adams and Matthew Lillard Have Trouble with the Curve

clint eastwood trouble with curve casting

Gran Torino was supposed to have been Clint Eastwood?s swansong, as an actor. However, in the latter months of 2011, news got out that the 81-year-old Hollywood icon would work in front of the camera one more time on Trouble with the Curve, the directorial debut of his frequent assistant director/producer, Robert Lorenz.

Sandra Bullock was briefly raised as a possibility to portray Eastwood?s daughter in the film, but a scheduling conflict reportedly forced the Oscar-winning actress to withdraw. Word got out shortly thereafter that another acclaimed starlet, namely Amy Adams, could be taking Bullock?s place; now, it seems that casting move is essentially set in stone.

EW has the exclusive on Matthew Lillard being in talks to also join the cast of Trouble with the Curve. The star of the original Scream and live-action Scooby-Doo movies is in a good place right now, thanks to his supporting turn in the new Golden Globe-winning (and Oscar front-runner)?The Descendants ? so, signing on for what should actually?be Eastwood?s final starring vehicle could easily help keep Lillard?s win streak alive.

The Wrap has also learned that Joe Massingill is being eyed for Trouble with the Curve.?The young Georgia-born actor only has one-episode stints on TV shows like Glee and Zeke and Luther on his resume. Combine that with the likelihood that Massingill is being eyed for a pivotal part in Lorenz? film and it?s safe to say, this casting move will only help his standing in Hollywood.

Trouble with the Curve tells the tale of a nearly-blind baseball scout (Eastwood) who sets out with his adult daughter (Adams) for one final recruiting mission to check out a promising up-and-coming player in Atlanta (Massingill?). Lillard, should he sign on, would portray a rival scout.

trouble with curve clint eastwood amy adams matthew lillard

Adams, Lillard, & Massingill may all have 'Trouble with the Curve'

It?s interesting how Trouble with the Curve?has the potential to be a breakout project for several people, including Massingill as an actor, Lorenz as a director, and relative newcomer Randy Brown as a screenwriter. Kind of ironic, really, seeing how it?s both a story about the end of one man?s professional career (life?) AND meant to be a final sendoff for Eastwood as a star of the big screen.

Lorez, as mentioned before, hasn?t actually directed a film yet, so it will be interesting to see how much he?s learned (and borrows) from Eastwood, having collaborated with the man on virtually every one of his projects released over the past decade. In all honesty, there seems to be a good chance that Trouble with the Curve could look and feel so much like an Eastwood-directed flick that many casual moviegoers will assume that?s actually the case.

Trouble with the Curve is scheduled to begin production by March 2012. Since it?s an inexpensive, character-driven drama, shooting shouldn?t take too long; according to IMDB, the film is already set to hit theaters in France by January 2013. So, a late Oscar-qualifying U.S. limited run before the end of 2012 doesn?t seem out of reach (for now).

China Emerges as World's Fastest-Growing Automotive MEMS ...

Driven because of the aggressive implementation of car or truck basic safety and pollution mandates, China has emerged since the world?s fastest-growing region for product sales of automotive microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), according to a whole new IHS iSuppli Automotive MEMS Promote Transient from material and examination company IHS.
China?s automotive MEMS sector is anticipated to develop to $387.nine million in 2015, up from $194.three million in 2010. This equates to a five-year compound annual progress rate of 14.eight % substantially increased compared to around the globe ordinary of nine %. ?MEMS really are a important enabling expertise to improve the basic safety and reduce carbon emissions in motor automobiles,? commented blog , senior analyst for MEMS and sensors at IHS. ?With China?s motor vehicle product sales booming and its sensor usage soaring, the country?s automotive MEMS sector is set for world-leading progress with the year 2015.?
Vehicle sector will get back in gear
The growth with the international automotive is being fueled by a revived passenger car or truck sector, which happens to be projected to rebound in the financial slump. Manufacturing of passenger autos for the Chinese sector is set to improve to 22.2 million models in 2015, up from debora 16.three million in 2010.
Total, China will continue being the world?s third main user of automotive throughout the five-year time period, ahead of Japan in addition to a assortment of nations underneath the designation ?Rest with the World.? North The usa will carry on to lead the house, followed by Europe. Intercontinental automotive MEMS income is forecast to hit $2.nine billion in 2015, up greater than 50 % from $1.nine billion in 2010.

Right now the biggest automotive MEMS apps concerning unit shipments are airbags, followed by silicon MEMS manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensors needed for engine administration. Nevertheless, TPMS will outpace airbags in 2015.
A person other software, electronic balance management to help reduce skidding in automobiles, is at present underpenetrated in China and can continue being so except if there exists a authorities mandate. Official authorities suggestions have set a national standard in China for TPMS, which might have can come into result in July but will ramp up in mid-2012. China is adopting TPMS ahead rochette.listdiscount.info of Japan with an eye to your useful advantages that might be derived: The characteristic in automobiles not simply saves lives but affects the surroundings, as appropriate tire pressure outcomes in improved mileage and significantly less carbon emissions. China?s notable position in employing TPMS for its automobiles will accelerate the international TPMS sector to a fitment rate of 73 % by 2015.
By following year, more high-end car or truck types in China would be equipped with TPMS ahead of other mandates, these as adaptive front headlights, brake help and adaptive cruise management, IHS study suggests.
