Hurricane Isaac delivers a slow blow in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS ? On the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on Wednesday, this city absorbed a rough reminder of the Gulf Coast's vulnerability as big, slow Hurricane Isaac delivered a punishing but less powerful blow than its catastrophic predecessor.

The massive storm lingered all day, lashing the coast with torrential rains and hurricane-force winds. Flooding was widespread from New Orleans through Mississippi and Alabama as downed trees and power lines left more than 600,000 customers without electricity.

An upgrade of New Orleans' 133-mile flood-control system largely withstood the deluge, but to the west, St. John the Baptist Parish was inundated by storm surge from Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday night that officials had evacuated about 1,500 people and had about that many to go.

Elsewhere along Lake Pontchartrain, 60 people were rescued from a flooded area of St. Tammany Parish, said Christina Stephens, spokeswoman for the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

And in isolated Plaquemines Parish, where Isaac came ashore Tuesday night, floodwaters spilled over part of a locally maintained 81/2 -foot-high levee, putting parts of the sparsely populated area under 12 feet of water. More than 100 residents were rescued by a flotilla of police, National Guardsmen and volunteers.

Most of those trapped had ignored a mandatory evacuation order issued Monday for Plaquemines, located on a finger of land that juts south of New Orleans and is bisected by the Mississippi River. On Wednesday, authorities ordered a mandatory evacuation for about 3,000 people protected by an 8-foot levee along the river's west bank, south of Belle Chasse, Jindal said.

For all the flooding and dislocation, Isaac was nothing like Katrina, in part because local and federal officials had learned from the 2005 catastrophe. Emergency efforts were much better coordinated, most residents were evacuated in good order and the revamped flood-control system held up. Statewide, at least 7,700 people have been evacuated, Stephens said.

Even with relentless rain, Isaac lacked Katrina's catastrophic maximum 28-foot storm surge and 125-mph winds. Katrina, a strong Category 3 hurricane when it came ashore, caused more than 1,800 deaths, mostly in Louisiana. By Wednesday night, there were no reports of deaths directly attributable to Isaac.

The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and a storm surge of 6 to 12 feet. It was downgraded to a tropical storm Wednesday afternoon, as the rain and wind continued, floodwaters rose and tornado warnings were issued. By 10 p.m., the storm's sustained winds had dropped to 60 mph.

The National Hurricane Center warned that "life-threatening hazards from storm surge and inland flooding are still occurring."

Isaac was expected to lumber through Louisiana overnight and into Thursday, passing into Arkansas on Thursday evening. The hurricane center warned of rainfall accumulations of up to 25 inches, and reported that 22.5 inches had fallen in Arabi, next to the Lower 9th Ward.

For many in New Orleans, Isaac's chief offense was its glacial pace, 6 mph.

"Unfortunately, the storm just won't seem to leave us," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said.

The storm is also noteworthy for its 350-mile girth. Tropical-force winds extended 175 miles from the storm center.

Louisiana officials warned residents not to relax, because Isaac's effects could last into Friday. "Now is not the time to let your guard down," Landrieu said.

"There is much more coming," Jindal said.

By late Wednesday, one-third of Louisiana households ? roughly 660,000 homes ? were without power, including 160,000 in Orleans Parish, according to spokesperson Chanel Lagarde of New Orleans-based Entergy. Thousands were also without power in Mississippi.

"We haven't been able to get crews out today because of the weather; it continues to be bad here," Lagarde said. "We're hoping to get scouts out in the field in the morning to do damage assessments."

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport had no power. All of its commercial flights were canceled for Thursday, the third straight day, officials said.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in New Orleans, where police and the National Guard patrolled the streets.

In Plaquemines, water reached rooftops as police and volunteers in small boats plucked stranded residents from the tops of their homes. Animals were rescued as well, including about 15 dogs, a cat in a cage and even a fawn.

Between nine and 40 people could still be stranded there, Jindal said. Officials planned to send out teams Thursday to decide when and where to breach the levee to relieve the pressure.

"If that's a Category 1 storm, I don't want to go through anything stronger," parish president Billy Nungesser told WWL-TV.

In Mississippi, where residents in three Gulf Coast counties generally obeyed mandatory evacuation orders, roads were flooded and blocked by fallen trees, and all-night curfews were in effect.

"The storm has decided to sit, pretty much unmoved ? it's just pushing up water to our tributaries and low-lying areas," said Monica Cooper, spokeswoman for Jackson County, Miss., which includes Pascagoula. "We are preparing for a night of continued rain and flooding."

Tweetbot for Mac beta is here. Sort of.

Tweetbot for Mac alpha expires, Tweetbot for Mac beta replaces it. Sort of.

The Tweetbot for Mac alpha is set to expire today. Tapbots has released a beta to replace it, but it comes with a huge, Twitter-policy forced, caveat: You can't add any previously un-added Twitter accounts to it. Developer Paul Haddad explains why on the Tapbots blog:

You can grab the Tweetbot for Mac Beta here. It?s important to realize that with this build you can?t add or reauthorize any accounts. If you delete an account or de-authorize an existing account you will not be able to add it again until the final version comes out.

If you try to add a new account or launch the app with no accounts created you are going to end up right here on this page.

So you can replace the Tweetbot for Mac alpha with the Tweetbot for Mac beta, but you can't add any accounts to it you haven't added already, or replace any you remove in the future (until the final version is released in the Mac App Store). The reason for all this hooha is, of course, and the reason Tapbots had to remove the alpha download previously, Twitter's new, developer-hostile API 1.1 rules which greatly restrict the amount of user tokens any 3rd party app can receive. Ever.

That also means if you tried Tweetbot for Mac alpha, and didn't like it, you should got to Twitter.com and revoke access to it, and any other Twitter app you're no longer using, so the developers can re-use those tokens for future users.

You can grab the new Tweetbot for Mac beta via the link below.

Despite atypical release, movie audiences find anti-Obama documentary '2016'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - It wasn't backed by any Hollywood movie studio. Reviews were mostly negative. It premiered in Houston, not Los Angeles or New York. And yet despite the unconventional release of "2016: Obama's America," the movie is now among the most successful political documentaries of all time ? and it doesn't show signs of cooling down ahead of the presidential election.

The conservative film exploring the roots of President Barack Obama's political views surprised the film industry when it took in $6.5 million to land at No. 7 at last weekend's domestic box office ahead of three new releases: the Joseph Gordon-Levitt action flick "Premium Rush," the Kristen Bell comedy "Hit and Run" and the Ashley Greene horror film "The Apparition."

That makes "2016" the most successful conservative documentary of all time. It's also the sixth overall highest grossing political documentary behind four Michael Moore movies and former Vice-President Al Gore's environmental film "An Inconvenient Truth." It all adds up to a remarkable triumph for an indie film that circumvented the liberal waters of Hollywood.

The film has continued to do well during the slower weekday period, especially considering that it's been up against the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Since last weekend, it earned an additional $5.9 million for a total of $12.4 million, placing No. 3 at the domestic box office on Wednesday.

Distributed by Salt Lake City-based Rocky Mountain Pictures, "2016" is directed by Dinesh D'Souza, a former staffer for President Ronald Reagan who is now president of King's College in New York and author of several books, including "The Roots of Obama's Rage," the basis for "2016" that claims Obama's beliefs are rooted in the anti-colonialism of his late father, a Kenyan academic who was largely absent from the president's life.

The film premiered July 13 on one screen in Houston and slowly expanded over the past month to 1,091 theatres in such cities as Nashville, Tenn.; Baton Rouge, La.; Denver; Phoenix; Wichita, Kan.; and Washington, D.C. MJM Entertainment's Mark Joseph, who is handling the film's marketing, attested that "2016" had to be promoted differently than typical Hollywood fare.

"You can't just throw up your star on Thursday night on a talk show," said Joseph. "That's not how this works. The traditionalist audience needed to hear about the film much sooner than what Hollywood is used to doing. It's also important that they heard about it from people that they trust and admire. It's a different way of engaging the audience."

Joseph and the film's co-director, John Sullivan, launched a stealthy campaign for the film that attracted the attention and support of right-wing superstars like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. Buzz for the movie simmered over the summer, bubbling up last weekend before the Republican convention kicked off Tuesday.

"Timing is everything," said Greg Mueller, a conservative strategist whose public relations firm is promoting "The Hope and The Change," a film about voters who formerly supported Obama that debuted Tuesday at the Republican convention and is now available on DVD. "Timing is everything in politics. It's even more important in political documentaries."

"Fahrenheit 9-11," director Michael Moore's assault on President George W. Bush, opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theatres. It went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever released with $119.1 million domestically, a world away from "2016's" haul so far.

While the release of "2016" just before the Republican convention and its portrait of a gloomy future if Obama is re-elected might make the film feel like an hour-and-a-half-long political ad, the "2016" filmmakers said they only received funding from private investors, not the Republican party, and the movie's proceeds aren't headed to Mitt Romney's presidential bid.

"We wanted none of their involvement," said Gerald Molen, the film's Montana-based producer who previously worked on such mainstream Hollywood movies like "Days of Thunder" and "Jurassic Park," and who won an Oscar for "Schindler's List" in 1993. "It wouldn't have made sense to do that." He added that the film's estimated $2.5 million budget only came from about two dozen donors supporting D'Souza.

Hollywood has long been inspired by the political process, and such an affinity usually burns brighter during election season when audiences are attuned to politics, whether it's through recent fictional fare like the USA miniseries "Political Animals" and the Will Ferrell comedy "The Campaign" or Moore's "Fahrenheit 9-11," which came out before the 2004 election.

Alex Ben Block, a senior editor at The Hollywood Reporter doesn't think that "2016" will usher in a new era for right-wing films, but he believes the unexpected success of the conservative film might encourage likeminded filmmakers to carve out a similar path in landscape that was previously dominated by more liberal filmmakers like Moore. Ultimately, Block said moviegoers will vote at the box office with their dollars.

"'2016' has succeeded, but it's going to be very hard to duplicate," said Block. "These things are driven by politics and passion. They're driven by people who are trying to be noticed and make their point. It's a powerful combination when you have a documentary that can be both commercial and have a point of view."

Although "2016" has obviously found fans, most critics haven't been kind to the film. Newsday's Rafer Guzman called it an "attempt at character assassination." The Arizona Republic's Bill Goodykoontz deemed it "an exercise in preaching to the choir." The Los Angeles Times' Betsy Sharkey lambasted "2016" for being a "sluggish film" whose "outrage falls flat."

"I think '2016' has a nice gimmick because it purports to show what the future will look like right there in the title," said film critic Ben Mankiewicz, who dismissed the film as an actual documentary and is unsure what its unexpected success means for the film industry. "I think it is another reminder of how many people in this country find Obama so shockingly unlikesome that they are seemingly ready to believe the most nonsensical theories about him."

Many of the assertions D'Souza makes in the film to support his point that Obama's presidency is an expression of his father's third-world political beliefs don't hold up, including that Obama removed a bust of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office because Churchill represented British colonialism and that Obama has "done nothing" to impede Iran's nuclear ambitions. And there are other instances where the film takes liberties with the facts.

"I don't necessarily agree with everything that's in the movie," said Arthur Hobbs, a retired engineer who caught a Monday matinee of the film in Los Angeles with his wife after reading about it online. "But I do think that we really don't know everything about Obama, even after he's been in office for four years. I think that's why we needed to see this movie."

Molen said he expected the bad reviews. The filmmakers, who plan to expand the film to even more cities in the coming weeks and keep it in theatres until early October, aren't fazed by any negative reaction. They just hope now that conservative audiences have found "2016," perhaps left-leaning moviegoers will be curious enough to buy a ticket.

"My wish is that people see the film and make an informed decision," said Molen. "I would love people to see the film and come out of it saying, 'I need to know more. I need to find out more about this country and what we're designing for our kids, grandkids and great grandkids.' I just want this film to spark an interest in people to find out more."

Read James Holmes? rejected grad school application letter

James Holmes' booking photo (Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office)

James Holmes, the former Univ. of Colorado graduate student accused of killing 12 people during last month's theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., had applied to the Univ. of Iowa's neuroscience program in 2011, but was rejected.

"Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances," Dan Tranel, neurology professor and director of psychology at the Univ. of Iowa, wrote in an email to the admissions committee published Thursday by the Denver Post.

The Jan. 30, 2011, email included Tranel's recommendations for seven applicants, including Holmes. Other candidates for the program were characterized by Tranel as "stellar," "solid," "solid, not spectacular" and "probably fine." Tranel advised the committee to offer admission to four, saying he was not sure about two others. Holmes, though, he was sure about.

Holmes applied to several other schools, including the Univ. of Illinois--which accepted him. But he chose to attend the Univ. of Colorado Denver.

[Complete coverage: Colorado theater shooting]

According to his application, Holmes--a graduate of the Univ. of California-Riverside--wanted to pursue a degree in neuroscience because of his "foremost passions, the science of learning, cognition and memory."

"I have always been fascinated by the complexities of a long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness," Holmes wrote in his application letter. "I have an unquenchable curiosity, a strong desire to know and explore the unknown, and a need to persist against the odds."

Holmes--who gave himself the title of "aspiring scientist"--also recounted his childhood in California and his experience as a camp counselor for underprivileged children:

Behind the cluster of houses, rows upon rows of strawberries grew in the Salinas valley. As a child I passed these strawberry fields everyday on my way to school into the town of Castroville, "The Artichoke Center of The World". At school everyone wore a mandatory uniform consisting of navy blue jeans for the boys and a navy blue skirt for the girls, while everyone donned a white shirt. I didn't know at the time why uniforms were necessary but later discovered the uniforms were issued to curb gang rivalry. Looking back, my life could have gone in a completely different direction had I not possessed the foresight to choose the path of knowledge. I chose to appreciate an education, cultivating my mind. Since then I have strived to find new and better ways to learn, to improve. This is why I aim to attend graduate school and why my primary aim is to explore learning and memory.

In the field of cognitive neuroscience, researchers come from many different backgrounds and bring part of who they are to their investigations. I too will bring my past, specifically my strong moral upbringing. In addition, I will also exemplify my resolution and clairvoyance in problem solving. These abilities and more are typified in a summer job I performed as a camp counselor for underprivileged children.

Assuming a leadership role was something I was previously unaccustomed to but I took on the task with fervor. For the next week, twelve boys ages ten to eleven would look up to me for guidance and direction in Cheyenne cabin. Following them, nine more weeks with nine more groups. Every day there were activities for the kids but one of the activities "create your own," tended to turn into chaos. At first I chose to let the kids decide what they wanted to do and put it to a vote. Democracy right? Bad idea. Some wanted to go to the game room, others wanted to rest, some wanted to go to the field but there was no way to manage everyone if they split up. The outcome resulted in twelve kids arguing with each other, name calling and pushing. To resolve these types of incidents from occurring again I changed my strategy. "Create your own" became game room on Monday, sports on Tuesday, drawing on Wednesday... and if the kids were really good I devised something special for them like lizard catching. In the middle of that week when the campers were writing letters to home about their camp experience one of the little guys asked me how to spell amazing.

When it was time for each cabin to go home there were always kids telling me they wanted the same cabin next summer and if I would be back again to be their cabin counselor. At those moments I felt a sense of unparalleled accomplishment.

Other times I felt that I could be doing more. On average, two of the kids per cabin were clinically diagnosed with ADHD. One of the weeks, I mentored a kid with Schizophrenia. At 3:30 a.m. he woke up and vacuumed the ceiling of our cabin. These kids were heavily medicated, but this did not solve their problems, only create new ones. The medication changed them from highly energetic creative kids to lax beings who slept through the activities. I wanted to help them but couldn't. This is where neuroscience research becomes invaluable.

With a neuroscience doctorate there is even more to accomplish. Those most in need of an education including children and people with cognitive disabilities, can benefit from the results of research into the workings of learning, memory and brain-behavior relations. Indeed all aspects of society have the potential to gain from advancements in our understanding of learning and memory because we are all connected. We all share one brain, the human brain.

Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others during the July 20 massacre at a midnight screening of "A Dark Knight Rises"--several weeks after failing an oral exam at University of Colorado Denver. According to the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office, Holmes was barred from the school's Anschutz Medical Campus after he made threats in June.

Prosecutors also say Holmes told a classmate in March that he wanted to kill people.

Holmes' defense attorneys say he is mentally ill.

A Guide to Trading Forex to Earn that Extra Money! | Finance ...

Trading the stock market is normally only for people with a direct connection to the markets and captains of industry, right? Wrong. There are some markets which can be traded by just about anyone, which, if done successfully, could prove to be quite lucrative. One form of trading where it?s possible to potentially make significant profits is forex trading. Short for foreign exchange, trading forex involves speculating on whether one currency will strengthen or weaken against another currency e.g. GB Pound/US Dollar.

What is Forex trading

One of the best things about trading forex is that, unlike other, more traditional forms of trading, you could potentially make money regardless of whether there?s a rise or fall in the market you?re trading in. All you need to do to get started is open a forex trading account and find a guide to read before you commence trading. There are many great forex trading guides out there such as the how to trade forex guide by City Index, which is available online.

You choose a currency pair you know of, and either decide to ?go long?, which means you think the first currency in the pair will rise in value against the other. Or you can ?go short? if you believe a fall in value will happen. You start at a set price, and can close the trade when you?re satisfied with the level of profit made or want to limit any losses. It?s an attractive form of trading which can be done at any time of the day from Sunday night to Friday evening, as the forex markets are open for trading 24hrs a day between these days to allow for international time zones.

Any money made from trading forex could really help to boost your income. It could be used for home improvements, buying a new car or going on holiday abroad, or, if you have any debts that need clearing, you can wipe them out or reduce them if with your profits. However, when getting started, it?s important to be cautious, so that you know what to do in future when you?re used to forex trading.

It is also important to recognise that forex trading is a leveraged product and you can encounter losses that exceed your initial deposit. As such, forex trading is not for everyone. Please understand the risks involved before trading forex.

Egypt puts ex-PM Shafiq on travel watchlist

Former premier Ahmed Shafiq, who left Egypt amid a corruption probe after losing to Mohamed Morsi in a bitterly fought presidential election, has been placed on a watchlist and given a travel ban, judicial sources said on Wednesday.

Shafiq, a former air force chief appointed prime minister by president Hosni Mubarak before his overthrow early last year, is under investigation for an allegedly illegal sale of state land to Mubarak's sons.

He travelled to the United Arab Emirates after losing to his Islamist nemesis Morsi in June's election. Shafiq's spokesman said at the time that he would return to Egypt and form a party.

A source said it was unclear what would happen to Shafiq if he returned. In the past, people placed on the watchlist have been detained on arrival.

A number of former regime officials, including Mubarak himself, have been convicted of corruption or killing protesters during the 18-day uprising that unseated the dictator.

Mubarak's party leader and senate speaker Safwat al-Sharif was on Wednesday referred to trial along with his two sons for allegedly making 600 million pounds (roughly $100 million) in illicit gains.

Small family size increases wealth of descendants but reduces evolutionary success

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have taken a step closer to solving one of life's mysteries -- why family size generally falls as societies become richer.

Evolutionary biologists have long puzzled over this because natural selection is expected to have selected for organisms that try to maximise their reproduction. But in industrialised societies around the world, increasing wealth coincides with people deliberately limiting their family size -- the so-called 'demographic transition'.

In a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Centre for Health Equity Studies (Stockholm University/Karolinska Institutet) and UCL (University College London) reject a popular theory put forward to explain the phenomenon. This 'adaptive' hypothesis proposes that low fertility may boost evolutionary success in the long term by increasing offspring wealth, which in turn eventually increases the number of long-term descendants because richer offspring end up having more children.

The researchers found that having a small number of children increased the economic success and social position of descendants across up to four generations, but reduced the total number of long-term descendants. They conclude that the decision to limit family size can be understood as a strategic choice to improve the socioeconomic success of children and grandchildren in modern societies, but this socioeconomic benefit does not necessarily translate into an evolutionary benefit.

The study indicates a conflict in modern societies between behaviours promoting social and economic benefits versus biological success. This contrasts with traditional populations in the developing world, where behaviours that promote wealth and social status usually lead individuals to leave behind more genetic descendants.

The researchers tested these hypotheses using data from the Uppsala Multigenerational Birth Cohort Study, which tracks 14,000 people born in Sweden in the early 1900s and all their descendants to the present day.

They measured the socioeconomic success of each generation by looking at their school marks, at whether they went to university and at their household income across adulthood. Reproductive success was assessed by survival to adulthood, marriage before age 40 (a proxy for 'mating success') and fertility (number of offspring up to 2009).

Among both male and female children in the original cohort, smaller family size and higher parental socioeconomic position were both associated with substantially higher school marks, university entrance and income. These effects were particularly large when low fertility and high socioeconomic status coincided, with the benefits of small family size being particularly marked in wealthier groups. Moreover, these advantages were in turn passed on to the grandchild and great-grandchild generations.

But contrary to the adaptive hypothesis, small family size and high parental wealth either did not affect reproductive success beyond the first generation of offspring or if anything showed a negative effect in subsequent generations.

Lead author Dr Anna Goodman, Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "Under natural selection, you would expect organisms to use their resources to produce more genetic descendants, and so increase their Darwinian fitness. The demographic transition is a puzzle because at first sight it doesn't look like people are doing this. One adaptive explanation for the puzzle is that there exists a quantity-quality trade-off, such that having more children leads to those children being less able to reproduce in turn -- i.e. higher 'quantity' leads to lower biological 'quality'. However our study found this quantity-quality trade off only applied to descendants' socioeconomic success, not their reproductive success."

Co-author Dr David Lawson, from the Department of Anthropology at UCL, said: "One of our most interesting findings is that being from an initially wealthy household makes the benefits of small family size even bigger. Poorer households in contrast have relatively little to gain by limiting fertility, perhaps because the success of their children is more determined by broader societal factors, rather than investment and inheritance from parents, which is in short supply. This observation suggests a certain economic rationality to fertility patterns in the modern world, since fertility rates often drop first and most substantially in the wealthier sections of society when populations undergo demographic transition."

Professor Ilona Koupil, from the Centre for Health Equity Studies (Stockholm University/Karolinska Institutet) said: "It is important to note the equity implications of these findings. First, this research indicates that differences in family size may have lasting consequences on social inequalities. Second, this research provides evidence for the fact that people's educational levels and wealth not only affect schoolmarks and income in their children but also in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From a broader social policy perspective, our findings show that even in a country like Sweden with relatively low levels of inequality, we need policies that seek to equalise children's opportunities across families."

NASA to beam new will.i.am song from Mars

A song called "Reach for the Stars" will make its debut, appropriately, from space.

NASA plans to broadcast the tune, written by rapper and songwriter will.i.am, from its Curiosity rover, newly landed on the surface of Mars.

Though Curiosity has no speakers, it will transmit the song via radio waves back to Earth to be received at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET) Tuesday during an educational event at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: President Barack Obama orders that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff in honor of first moonwalker Neil Armstrong, who passed away over the weekend.

      2. NASA gets set for yearlong stays in orbit
      3. Rover sends first human voice from Mars
      4. Will.i.am song will get Red Planet premiere

"Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "Will.i.am will then premiere 'Reach for the Stars,' a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration."

During the event, NASA scientists and mission managers will talk about the Curiosity mission and explain the technology behind the broadcast to students. It won't be the first broadcast from space ? NASA used the Mars rover on Monday to broadcast a spoken message from the space agency's chief, Charles Bolden.

The musician will.i.am, a member of the Black Eyed Peas, was at JPL on Aug. 5 to watch Curiosity land on Mars. The car-sized, $2.5 billion rover is beginning a two-year mission to investigate whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support microbial life.

Taiwanese minister wants men to sit down to urinate

Should men sit down when urinating? (PR Newswire)Is it an unnecessary form of emasculation or a reasonable expectation of men in the modern age? The minister of Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has said that men should sit down when urinating.

The BBC reports that Stephen Shen has stirred debate online by suggesting the change in bathroom habits would lean to a cleaner environment. Shen has instructed local governments to put up notices in public restrooms "advising" men to sit when using the toilet.

"We want to learn from Japan and Sweden," Yuan Shaw-jing, EPA director general of environmental sanitation and toxic substance maintenance, told the BBC. "In Japan, we heard 30 percent of the men sit."

In June, Sweden's Left Party put forward a motion requiring men to sit down when using the toilet. Along with improved public hygienic standards, the Left Party cited research that it claims shows men "empty their bladders more effectively" when sitting down.

Taiwan's EPA said it has no authority to force men to change their bathroom habits and is simply putting up the notices as a suggestion to help improve the sanitary standards of the nation's estimated 100,000 public toilets.

And lest someone accuse him of hypocritical behavior, Shen told the BBC he practices what he preaches, both at home and when using public restrooms.

Lifestyle changes could prevent 400 cardiac events and 200 deaths in Swedish PCI patients

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Up to 400 cardiac events and 200 deaths in Swedish PCI patients could be avoided by following a heart healthy lifestyle, according to research from the SPICI study presented at ESC Congress 2012. The results were presented at ESC press conference by Professor Joep Perk from Linnaeus University and at the scientific session by Dr Roland CARLSSON.

The benefits of adherence to a heart healthy lifestyle in combination with drug treatment after an acute myocardial infarction treated with coronary artery balloon intervention (PCI) have recently been examined. The Fifth Organization to Assess Strategies in Acute Ischemic Syndromes (OASIS-5) trial showed an up to four-fold reduction of new cardiac events within six months after PCI among patients who followed lifestyle recommendations as compared to those who failed to do so.

The Study of Patient Information after Coronary Intervention (SPICI) investigated the possible gains of a heart healthy lifestyle in a large sample of Swedish patients after PCI (n=1073, 26% females, 74% males, average age 66 years). Within the first two months after PCI patients were asked to report on their current use of tobacco, physical activity and food habits.

The researchers found that although half of the previous smokers had quit, 16% still continued to use tobacco. Following nutritional guidance was reported by 55% but only 40% had changed their dietary habits. Approximately 50% were engaged in regular physical activity, mainly through training sessions in patient groups, but only 31% had actually increased their activity after PCI.

"A possible explanation may be the finding that many patients rated heredity and age as a more plausible cause of their disease than smoking, a lack of physical activity or poor food habits," said Professor Perk. "Furthermore, a majority reported that as a result of PCI they were cured from the underlying coronary heart disease, thus adding to a lack of interest in changing lifestyle."

"Each year 18,000 patients undergo PCI in Sweden," he added. "Using the data from the OASIS-5 study we estimate the expected event rate in the Swedish population during the first half year after PCI to be more than 1,000 new cardiac events (myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular death)."

He continued: "If a 100% compliance to lifestyle recommendations could be reached among our patients instead of the less than satisfactory outcome in the present study there may be major health benefits: one third of the events in Sweden might be prevented annually. That equates to preventing 300 to 400 cardiac events, of which 150 to 200 would have resulted in death."

Professor Perk concluded: "Current practice after PCI in Sweden needs an in-depth revision. Greater emphasis on lifestyle factors and on methods to support a long-term commitment to behavioural change, are urgently needed."

States Consider Names, Logistics For Health Insurance Exchanges ...

California officials ponder how to brand the new marketplaces to create consumer buzz, while Connecticut officials move ahead with plans to launch next year.

Los Angeles Times: California's Health Exchange Considers A Fruity New Name
Want to buy health insurance from an avocado? California thinks you might. Officials at the California Health Benefit Exchange, knowing their new online marketplace for medical insurance is a mouthful, are considering some new brand names to generate buzz with millions of consumers. "Avocado: A uniquely California approach to affordable health care" was one possibility presented at a board meeting Thursday (Terhune, 8/24).

The Associated Press: Conn. Moving Ahead With New Health Care Exchange
Connecticut officials are pushing ahead with plans to set up the new health insurance exchange, a marketplace where individuals and businesses can find affordable coverage, by next fall. The federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services this week awarded the state a $107 million grant. It was the latest allotment from the federal government as part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law. To date, the state has now received a total of $116 million (8/25).

In other health law news, a study shows Florida stands to leave a dollar on the table for every dime it saves from not expanding Medicaid --

The Associated Press: Florida Economists Reduce Health Care Estimates
State economists have reduced their estimates of what it would cost Florida to expand Medicaid under the federal health care overhaul. Gov. Rick Scott, an Affordable Care Act opponent, is against the expansion. It eventually would extend Medicaid coverage to about 900,000 more Floridians. While the overall numbers released Friday are lower, they still show Florida would lose about a dollar in federal funding for every dime of state savings from turning down the expanded program (8/24).

And some Connecticut health insurance rates are being driven higher by higher costs, not the health law --

The Connecticut Mirror: Connecticut Health Insurance Rate Increases Driven By Rising Costs, Not The Affordable Care Act, Filings Show
The double-digit rate increases recently granted to one and sought by two other large Connecticut health insurers are due mostly to increasing medical costs and only minimally to the impact of the Affordable Care Act, filings by the companies show. Aetna Health Inc. recently won approval for a 12.6 percent increase in its small group health insurance following its request for 14 percent -- just under a new 15-percent threshold that would have triggered a public hearing (Merritt, 8/27).

Did Taliban behead 17 people for dancing? Maybe not.

Initial reports said 17 people were beheaded by the Taliban for dancing and singing. Taliban leaders fighting over two women triggered the killings, says a provincial official.

Kabul's rock music school, which opened in May, reflects the return, although sometimes tentative, of social and individual freedoms since the end of the Taliban rule in 2001.

The head of the local government initially said the victims were civilians at a celebration late Sunday involving music and dancing in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province. The official, Neyamatullah Khan, said the Taliban killed the party-goers for flouting the extreme brand of Islam embraced by the militants.

But a provincial government official said later that those killed were caught up in a fight between two Taliban commanders over two women, who were among the dead. Daoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the provincial government, said shooting broke out during the fight. He said it was unclear whether the music and dancing triggered the violence and whether the dead were all civilians or possibly included some fighters.

RECOMMENDED: How well do you know Afghanistan? Take the quiz

Ahmadi said all of the bodies were decapitated but it was not clear if they had been shot first.

In other violence, two American soldiers were shot and killed by one of their Afghan colleagues in the east, military officials said. Afghan officials said the killings appeared to be accidental, however NATO would not comment on the question of whether the killings were intentional or accidental.

The Taliban has controlled large parts of the district of Musa Qala, an area encompassing more than 100 villages, since 2001. They enforce the same strict interpretation of Islamic law that was imposed on all of Afghanistan during Taliban rule of Afghanistan from 1996-2001.

U.S. Marines have battled the Taliban for years in Musa Qala, but the insurgent group still wields in significant power in the area as international forces across the country draw down and hand over control to Afghan forces. Helmand province, where Musa Qala is located, is one of the areas seeing the largest reduction in U.S. troops. The U.S. started reducing forces from a peak of nearly 103,000 last year, and plans to have 68,000 troops by October.

Many Afghans and international observers have expressed concerns that the Taliban will try to re-impose strict Islamic justice as international forces withdraw. Under the Taliban, all music and film was banned as un-Islamic, and women were barred from leaving their homes without a male family member as an escort.

The Taliban spokesman for southern Afghanistan could not be reached for comment on the beheadings.

But a Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf, who denied the group was involved. "I spoke to our commanders in those villages, but they know nothing of the event," he told Reuters.

In June, Taliban fighters stomed a lakeside hotel near Kabul demanding to know where the "prostitutes and pimps" were during a party, witnesses said. Twenty people were killed.

10 Proven Ways to Go Viral | Seymour Products

Although there is a debate as to when the term viral marketing really originated, it did rise in popularity in the mid to late 90?s. Viral marketing works just like a virus. One person reads a marketing message, gets infected by it and passes it on to another person. The better the message, the more it spreads. And the term viral marketing is born!

There are many methods and techniques for spreading your viral marketing message. The explosion of social media marketing has brought viral marketing to new heights. But along with social media there are also more traditional ways to spread your marketing virus. Below are ten totally doable ways to launch and propel your viral marketing campaign.

    1. Free eBook ? eBooks have been a very popular and effective means of viral marketing for quite some time. Compile a free PDF ebook using articles you have written, useful information, resources, etc., and start spreading that virus. Offer the ebook to your visitors for free. Write a message inside encouraging them to give the ebook to their visitors and so on and so on. Submit the ebook to free ebook sites and directories. Add a link to the ebook in your email sigtag. The better the content of the ebook the more the ?virus? will spread.

If you feel that you cannot write your own ebook, there are a lot of PLR and rebrandable ebooks you could use to achieve the same results.

    2. Newsletters ? If you publish a newsletter, you can use that to increase your viral marketing. Make it easy for people to share it with others. Encourage your subscribers to forward a copy to their friends so they can subscribe. Offer a free gift to the subscribers who can get the most people to subscribe.

    3. Articles ? Writing and submitting articles can be one of the most powerful viral marketing techniques. This will be most likely happen only if your article is well-written and contains helpful, useful information. Do not try to pass off a long sales pitch as an article. Submit your article to quality sites that allow visitors to reprint the article with your resource box. Add a Send to a Friend link in your resource box. When possible, thank the person for reprinting your article and let them know of any other articles you might have. Compile a list of newsletter publishers who accept article submissions. There are countless ways to spread your quality articles and infect many people.

    4. Social Media ? Social media has the capabilities of expanding your viral marketing to new heights. Try to regularly participate in at least the top three social sites which are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. A newcomer that is rising in popularity very fast is Pinterest so I would recommend starting with that one as well. When used effectively, these social media sites allow you to spread your virus in ways that were not before possible.

    5. Blogging ? Blogging is a form of social media marketing and can do wonders for your viral marketing. A quality blog will pull in many readers on a regular basis. Make it easy for your readers to interact with comments and opinions. Update your content consistently and always respond to reader comments for more success.

    6. Tell-A-Friend ? A free tell-a-friend script is a handy thing to have on your site or blog. It allows people to send your webpage to anyone they think would be interested thus launching your viral marketing. The easier it is for people to share your message the more your virus will spread.

    7. Social Media Share Buttons ? These highly effective buttons allow your visitors to easily share your blog, site or information with all their social media followers and friends. You can find many options for free that have these buttons for many of the social media sites. The first site to come up for some of these options is ShareThis.

    8. Videos ? Over two million people watch YouTube videos each day so getting your marketing video visible to this massive audience will pump up your viral marketing. You can also post video clips on your site with a well-spoken marketing message or demonstration. Make it easy for people to pass on your video to their friends and followers.

    9. Word-of-Mouth ? Word of mouth is one of the oldest forms of viral marketing. It?s been around long before the internet was ever dreamed of. It is also one of the most effective because people are passing on your message to people they know and their opinion is probably taken with more approval and consideration. It can also be more difficult because it requires people to take a more involved action than clicking a button. Make your customers feel happy and satisfied and they will spread the word (or virus).

    10. Email ? Email is one of the more traditional online viral marketing methods. How many times have you received emails that have been forwarded to you by people you don?t even know? That is the power of viral. Don?t be afraid to ask people to forward your emails to everyone they know. Sending out emails of value, quality and usefulness just might cause a widespread infection!

The power of viral marketing is unlimited but your marketing ?virus? needs to be unique, useful, entertaining and powerful. People will not spread something that is not worth spreading. Study marketing tactics of other companies but try to develop your own unique idea or twist of an old idea, that no one else has used before. Develop a new virus for which there is no cure!

Advice For Your Next Home Improvement Project - Lets Talk About Pot

Update your kitchen cabinets. If you are on a tight budget, a simple way to update your kitchen cabinets and drawers is by replacing the hardware. Knobs and pulls are available in a style to suit every one?s taste, from contemporary to vintage to traditional. When you replace the hardware, don?t forget to clean your cabinets thoroughly. You will be surprised how many people think that you have actually replaced your cabinets!

If you are new at home imrovement projects, or are working on your skillset, you are going to make some mistakes. Do not let setbacks get to you. If you let errors get you down, or halt your working, you are letting the process of home improvement beat you. You can master many tasks, but it will not happen overnight. Learn from your mistakes (or better still, learn from the mistakes of others!)

If you need fencing that is both affordable and versatile, opt for a wooden fence. You can choose from a variety of wood types to find the most appropriate material for your particular climate and moisture levels. Wooden fencing is very diverse and can easily be stained to one of many natural-looking colors.

If you put new cabinets in your home, your kitchen will glow with beauty and style. New cabinets show all of your family and friends that your kitchen is a professional place for cooking and entertainment. You can find cabinets in light wood stains and dark wood stains, giving you the ability to personalize your kitchen to your specific tastes.

Do not get too personal. When you over-personalize your home to fit the way you want it to look, it is very doubtful that you will be able to recover your investments once you attempt to sell your home. Opt instead for a timeless look that you still enjoy, and you will quickly make your money back if you have to sell.

Keep your partially used can of drywall compound from drying out between uses! All you have to do scrape and wipe the insides of the can down to the surface of the remaining drywall mud. Next, pour just enough water onto the mud to cover its surface. Before you use it again just pour off the water and it will be as good as new!

When managing your home in the summer months, make use of as many fans as you can. Ceiling fans especially help keep the air in a room circulating and therefore help keep the room cooler. Using room and ceiling fans can help reduce the amount of energy you use running an air conditioner, lowering your electric bill.

If you are looking to purchase new furniture, try not to get anything too big. The bigger the furniture is, the more cluttered a room will look. Instead, try to go with smaller, tasteful pieces. Arrange them in a way that the room is still easy to navigate in and out of.

Sunrooms are a great addition to any home and they add both value and activity. Enjoy relaxation at its best and enhance the aesthetics of your home by choosing to build a sunroom. Let the sun shine through! A sunroom provides energy for your home and it is definitely a great home remodeling project.

A breakfast bar makes a charming and functional addition to your home. If your kitchen and den already run together, you can easily add one that will fit nicely into the open space that you enjoy. You can add a quaint breakfast bar with counter and chairs for around five hundred dollars.

The dominant weather conditions in your region should be taken into account when you are considering which home improvement projects to take on. Regardless of how much you might want a specific new feature, sometimes it might be impractical because of the weather.
