Search is on for dangerous pack of dogs | WAVY.com | North Carolina

AHOSKIE, NC (WAVY) - A group of wild dogs is terrorizing Hertford County, and authorities say they're preying on family pets. So far, three animals have been attacked and killed.

"You don't know if they have rabies or something," said resident Carrie Hill. "You don't know if they are attacking dogs."

Deputies say several attacks have been reported in a neighborhood off N.C. 42.

"I was out in the yard just messing around, and I hear a bunch of dogs just making a lot of racket," said Raymond Newton. "After a few minutes, one of them just started squealing and sounded like he had been caught in a trap."

Newton went behind his neighbor's home to see what was going on, and that's where he spotted the dogs.

"I saw one of the dogs in the back, and then I saw another one chewing on some sort of animal," Newton explained.

But, it wasn't just any animal.

"We shed some tears," Hill said. "It was sad."

It was 3-year-old Woody, the HIll's lab mix. The family still can't believe he's gone.

"The kids have never lost a pet before," Hill added. "It was their first, real pet."

Woody was in the backyard Friday when the attack took place. He was the third pet dog to be killed by what officials call a pack of wild dogs.

"That's our main concern about the dogs," Newton said. "It's not so much about them running wild. They are killing small animals. They could kill small children."

"I would think that they are dogs that don't have owners anymore," Hill added. "They just form a pack and go look for food."

So far, Animal Control and deputies haven't been able to catch up with the pack of five, as they usually move on before crews get to the scene. The Hertford County Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone who sees the pack to give them a call at 252-358-7800.
