Owing to the increase in technological advancements, mechanical engineers are utilising factory automation as a means to develop technological methods. These methods integrate industrial machinery and equipment to replace the duties of humans, who would ordinarily conduct the same task through manual labour. In light of the above, factory automation can be defined as the use of control systems through instrumentation and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services. In order for these experts to effectively design and implement automated machinery, the methods of instrumentation are critical to ensure that machinery operates at optimal speed while still maintaining the control of variables such as flow, temperature, level, physical quantity and pressure throughout the production process. Instrumentation engineers are responsible for integrating the sensors with the recorders, transmitters, displays or control systems in a device or machine. The process also involves designing or specifying installation, wiring of devices, signal conditioning while testing and maintaining the system to ensure that all the elements are in good working condition.

The benefits of factory automation include:

? Improved labour productivity as the machinery can operate at a greater speed than humans. The speed at which the machinery operates can also be set and maintained according to factory standards and the desired need for production output ? Reduction in cycle time and floor space utilisation as the machinery takes up less space ? Better quality and improved reliability as the machines are managed and controlled according to the desired output ? Lower production costs as machines replace manual labour thus reducing the need to pay wages ? Able to perform tasks that are beyond human capability, speed, size, weight and endurance ? Reduces operational time and work handling time as the machines can be set according to specific requirements ? Frees up workers who can then partake in other roles where their skills can be used more effectively ? Saves money as a result of lower operational costs

The advancement in factory automation and instrumentation methods has resulted in significant impact in a wide range of industries beyond manufacturing. These include telephone operators and switchboards, medical processes such as the screening in electro-cardiology or radiography, the laboratory analysis of human genes, cells and tissues which are carried out at a greater speed and accuracy.

In addition, automated bank teller machines have reduced the need for one to visit the bank to carry our transactions. Other examples where automated machinery has replaced manual labour include:

? Machine operated tellers at retail outlets ? Purchasing movie tickets through automated machines ? Automated machines also available at tube stations for travellers wishing to purpose travel tickets and load money onto their travel card

Experts predict that as technology advances further, more automated machinery will replace manual human labour thus implementing simple tasks through technology in a more efficient and effective manner. This method will maximise results, output and generate a larger return on investment for the manufacturing, retail and medical industry, amongst others.
